Description

The Nagasaki Gubi stool was designed in 1954 and is still the most well-known piece by Mathieu Matégot. It was exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs of 1954 and, along with Ant Chair (1952) by Arne Jacobsen, is one of the few three-legged models. The stool is made of perforated sheet metal - Rigitulle, which characterizes the work of Matégot and presents unique details, such as the bracket that holds the seat and legs together. The seat is curved and arched, similar to the shape of a saddle and the overall effect is lightness. The highly graphic construction of the design is evocative of Le Corbusier's work for the Church of Ronchamp. Today the chair is part of the permanent collection of the Vitra Design Museum, privately owned and internationally renowned.
